Farmhouse Fire Restoration
Mr and Mrs Miller run a 350 acre farm raising Aberdeen Angus and Lincoln Red Cattle for Waitrose. In June 2009 they awoke at 3.00am to the sound of a double glazed unit exploding. With the Electricity having failed, the smell of smoke throughout the building and three young boys in the property, they were quick to react by getting out of the property.
Although their home had been built only in 2002, the Millers took the opportunity to make some improvements to the property. Primarily this involved redesigning the kitchen area and installing a new Aga cooker and improving the first floor layout to create 2 additional bedrooms.
When Topmarx were instructed to proceed with the repairs the first job was to get the living room of the property reinstated and to connect this up with the mobile home. The whole family slept in this room which was considerably warmer than the mobile home during the ensuing winter months.
A contract duration of 14 weeks was agreed. However everyone realised that if this could be improved upon there would be significant benefits for all concerned. The works were programmed tightly by Topmarx site manager Nick Goodall. On completion Mrs Miller commented, “Nick was a great motivator. He even had me joining in doing the hovering!” As a consequence the works were completed 4 weeks ahead of programme.
The new rooms make far better use of the available space upstairs, and the kitchen is beautiful. Oak doors and Corian worktops to the perimeter give a light and airy feel to this large opened out space with a brand new dark green Aga and adjacent granite worktop to a central island. Mr Miller commented “The house looked like a show home, the level of finish being extremely high”
And all this in spite of adverse weather conditions the like of which have not been seen for many years. By fulfilling individual promises at all stages through the project and working together with the client, Cunningham Lindsey, Surveying Services, the NFU, and Topmarx have a very satisfied client.
Mrs Miller was very pleased with the co-ordination and communication on site finding herself always well informed and when she had she had points to make there was someone willing to listen. “We have had a good run – no friction with anyone” she said.
